On Tuesday, 7 May, representatives of the Rotterdam Port Authority in the Netherlands and the Chinese Port of Guangzhou signed a partnership agreement in Guangzhou.
These organizations are going to share expertise and best practices in the area of port management. The partnership fits in with the Rotterdam Port Authority's strategic goals. They want to share Dutch knowledge and expertise with international ports. They also want to be a frontrunner in the development of new markets.
The Port of Rotterdam has a good international reputation. This is thanks to the port's infrastructure, and it's strong port and industrial complex. This European port also has a diversity of goods streams and industries. There are various ways in which the Rotterdam Port Authority can share its knowledge and expertise.
These include feasibility studies and entering into partnership agreements, such as this one with Guangzhou. Earlier, the Rotterdam Port Authority closed similar contracts with other port cities. These include Shanghai, Shenzhen, Singapore, and Tokyo. They also signed an agreement with Thai port authorities.
Just like Rotterdam, Guangzhou is a multi-faceted port. It has grown and keeps growing, thanks in part to container handling. Guangzhou is one of the largest container ports in the world. In 2018, it had a throughput of about 22 million TEU. In comparison, the Port of Rotterdam handled 14,5 million TEU in that same year.
