France: "Fresh sweet corn is a controversial vegetable"

Last week, Aurélie Langlumé, a farmer and the co-manager of the Provençal company Medifel, came to MedFEL to present her fresh sweet corn. According to her, fresh sweetcorn is already a well-established international market. "This product has become more and more popular in production. For us, it is therefore important to distinguish ourselves. "The company offers fresh French sweet corn from June to November.

This year Medifel is focusing on the evolution of the product, and is working intensively on quality. "One of our priorities is to protect ourselves against insect damage, for which we cooperate with experts," says Aurélie. "The time of harvest is also important, to have a sweet product. The harvest period therefore requires special attention. That is why all our harvesting is done by hand and then sold immediately in order to preserve the benefits of all its organoleptic qualities."

According to Aurélie, sweet corn was a niche product that is now beginning to become more popular. "But sweet corn sometimes suffers from a negative image. A large number of French consumers do not consider it a vegetable. So we have to change this image, because nutritionally speaking, fresh sweet corn is a very good, very rich, non-fat product. It is also an interesting product for diabetics."

Aurélie markets her fresh sweet corn under the Maïstro brand. A website is dedicated to consumers who wish to discuss the benefits of fresh sweet corn, share recipe ideas and follow the progress of crops.

Medifel markets fresh sweet corn and cultivates about 60 or 70 hectares, depending on demand.
