Jacob Aktalan, MG Fruit:

"Yellow melons are the highlight of difficult melon market"

The last arrivals of overseas melons will arrive this week. "With the earlier start of the Spanish melon season, which was two to three weeks earlier, the overseas season didn't come to the best of ends. The yellow melon season went reasonably well, but it will be a close call or cost price for other varieties. All in all it wasn't a great season," concludes Jacob Aktalan of MG Fruit.

The Spanish melon season isn't off to the best start either so far. "The production of watermelons is huge and will get bigger. What we need is good weather, so that we can sell them quickly. Prices of watermelons are currently around 50-60 cents and the sales of Moroccan watermelons in the bins isn't leaving much," concludes the importer.

"There are still some overseas Galia on the market. The price of Spanish Galia's is between 3 and 3.50 Euro, so not much room there either. The highlight on the melon market is the yellow melon, which has had a good season from the Costa Rica season with prices between 12 and 14 Euro," concludes Jacob.
