China: Banana prices holding up at the growers end, even as the retail prices fall

The prices of many fruits began to drop in March after the effect of the festive season wore off. Extensive surveillance of fruit markets throughout China shows that the retail price of bananas is also falling. The price of bananas is 1.4 yuan [0.21 USD] per 0.5 kg in New Liuyong Market, Guangxi. This is less than half of the 3 yuan [0.45 USD] per 0.5 kg that bananas cost at the height of this season.

The weather is warming up and other fruits such as cherries, tomatoes, pineapples, and Hami melons gradually enter the market. As the supply volume of seasonal fruits is growing, the pressure on the price of such staple fruits as bananas also grows. Furthermore, the additional demand during the festive season is now over, and the price therefore declines.

In contrast with retail prices, the purchase price of bananas in production areas is still rising. The price of top-quality bananas is around 3-4 yuan [0.45-0.60 USD] per kg. Top-quality bananas from Laos even cost as much as 5 yuan [0.75 USD] per kg, and their retail price is only around 5-6 yuan [0.75-0.90 USD]. The number of visiting traders naturally declines.
