Around 6% fewer apples on the fresh market than expected

Enough organic apples until the next harvest?

The European organic apple producers have enough apples in stock, as despite weather-related challenges, the 2018 harvest was fruitful. As a result, the market can be supplied until the next season, according to the European Organic Fruit Forum.

Heat had an effect on the fresh market
For fruit growers, production year 2018 was marked by extreme weather conditions, says the European Organic Fruit Forum. The great summer drought in northern Europe and major heat waves in more southern production areas were a challenge whenever there were no good irrigation options. Due to the weather, insect pests would have left more obvious traces on the fruit surfaces than usual.

Therefore, about 6% fewer apples had entered the fresh market than originally assumed. Instead, these products went to the processing industry. Nevertheless, the Forum thinks the supply is still secure, as the yield was large enough and as some areas in Europe received their biostatus in the 2018 season.
