Chilean president Sebastián Piñera accepted an invitation from Chinese president Xi Jinping for an official visit to China. During the visit Piñera emphasized that Chile is China's window into Latin America and could be the key to China's entry in the regional market.
"We want to turn Chile into the heart of Chinese commercial activity in the region," said the Chilean president in Beijing during a conference on innovation and investment. The two main topics discussed by Chilean and Chinese representatives were artificial intelligence and e-commerce.
Javiera Quiroga, director of the ProChile institution that encourages Chilean export and foreign investment, explained that the purpose of this visit was to strengthen relations with "our most important trade partner" China. Quiroga pointed out that Chile is of course a small market in comparison with China, but Chile is also the doorway to China's entry into the Latin American market.
