France: Amap promotes local production and organic agriculture

In Venelles, Bouches-du-Rhône, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region, Amap (the association for the maintenance of a peasant agriculture) is among the first associations to promote local production and an agriculture which is organic and respectful of the environment. Created 10 years ago by two producers, Frédéric Durand Lopez and Matthieu d’Hauthuille, both AB certified, the association offers baskets to his members.

These “Amapians” must register with one of the producers and it is not possible to change the subscription during the season. The contract implies a commitment to buy a basket each week. The members can choose between different options: a normal basket, 13 to 26 lbs, for 24 euros [27 USD] or the smaller one, 7 to 13 lbs, for 14 euros [16 USD]. They must subscribe to Amap of Provence and Association Avec (Venelles association for public expression) for 10 euros each [11 USD].
