US: Doctors in District of Columbia 'prescribe' fruits and vegetables

Some doctors in DC are prescribing more than just medicine. They're actually writing prescriptions for fruits and vegetables.

The pilot program is helping people without access to healthy foods: 20 dollars a week, or 40 dollars every two weeks, to buy fresh items from the produce section.

Council member Mary Cheh, who got DC to kick in $400,000 for the pilot program, says such prevention will cut health costs, and is doable on a large scale: "The idea is to combine federal money, and there is money in the Farm Bill for this."

Here is a short new clip on the subject.
