The price of commercial lemons will continue to rise as long as production is not regulated in other states of the country.
Tamaulipas is a producer and exporter of Italian lemon. However, the lemon consumed in Tamaulipas is more commercial and comes from other states, as long as it complies with all the rules and requirements implemented by the plant health authorities and SENASICA.
The members of the Union of Citrus growers attached to the National Peasant Confederation-CNC stated that, according to consultations and opinions between traders and producers, the current price of this citrus will remain high, "as bringing lemon from others states is probably one of the causes of the increase in price."
They also said that the rains were very necessary, especially at this time when the citrus, sorghum, and corn crops are growing, and that there could be some losses in production because it hasn't rained.
In addition, the water supply sources are currently over 50 percent, as the recovery rates in the different dams of the state are somewhat bleak.
In view of this, producers contemplate talking with the authorities of the Rural Development Secretariat to discuss everything related to agricultural insurance, which each year they acquire and that generally guarantees an important number of agricultural areas and, in citrus production, also protects all the social sector.
