China: End of banana production in Yunnan as supply from Hainan increases

The market conditions for bananas changed last week. The main change occurred in Yunnan where most banana production areas are nearing the end of the production season. The supply volume from Laos and Myanmar is also relatively small. During the period of Songkran [Thai New Year, April 13th to 15th, 2019], the price of bananas first dropped and then increased again. However, the fluctuations are relatively small, because the relation between supply and demand is not that strong. People in the industry explained that this is part of the regular pattern.

The main production area of bananas in Yunnan currently is Xishuangbanna. The price of top-quality bananas in Xishuangbanna is around 3.2-3.8 yuan [0.48-.057 USD] per kg, and the same goes for Myanmar. The supply from Laos is larger and the price is higher than 5 yuan [0.74 USD] per kg. The supply volume from Hainan grows, but the price does not rise. Neither does the price show significant decline.
