The end of the onion stock is in sight. This is the cautious conclusion of the Dutch Agricultural Growers Union's (VTA) April stock inventory. The results show that 86% of the harvest was already delivered on 1 April. In a typical season, this is usually at around the 70% mark.

Also, 53% of the remaining onion stock has already been sold. Last season, 71% of the stock was still available. As a result, this season, only 6,6% of the harvest is still available as free stock. This, while the harvest was already 35% lower than in a normal season. On average, over the previous seasons, 20% of the harvest was still available as free stock.
In definite tons, there is 70% less stock than last season at around the same time. The free stock, based on definite total tons, is 78% lower than last year. This amount is 76% lower than the five-year average.
There are, therefore, no big surprises in this last stocktake of the season. It was done by the VTA among its members last week.
