Applewood Fresh Growers LLC has announced its expansion to a company that not only offers apples but also fresh Michigan asparagus. The asparagus season in Michigan lasts from approximately May 10th to June 25th. This is a tight window for the harvesting season, but the company says its new partner, New Era’s American Asparagus, is sharp on production.
“We are excited to partner with New Era’s American Asparagus to bring our customers the best asparagus Michigan has to offer. This partnership is the next iteration in our strategic plan to diversify,” said Nick Mascari, President at Applewood Fresh.
Michigan is now the largest asparagus growing region in the US thanks to its unique, sandy loam soil along the shores of Lake Michigan. New Era’s American Asparagus product is cooled with a Hydrocooler immediately after harvest. The product is then placed in a cooler prior to packing inside a refrigerated packing room. Caleb Coulter, Owner of New Era’s American Asparagus, explained: “We keep this process as short as possible to increase our customer’s shelf life & quality of the product.”
Michigan asparagus has excellent flavor and a long shelf life, according to the company, adding that consumers prefer locally grown asparagus. Applewood Fresh said it is also offering new marketing tools to support the Michigan asparagus program. The marketing material includes grower and product POS, recipes, high resolution photos, and more.
