Biocoop is thinking big

With its new president, Pierrick de Ronne, the cooperative brand Biocoop announced that it wants to continue its expansion and launch new store formats.

Biocoop ended 2018 with a revenue of 1.2 billion euros [1.35 billion USD] (overall progression of 11%). The distribution chain of organic products remains at the top of the specialized networks despite a clear slowdown in the growth of the cooperative, due to the strong competition on the organic market and the parallel development of many networks.

Claude Gruffat, who was president of the cooperative since 2004, stepped aside in order to run for the European elections. The new director wants to maintain the brand’s leadership by further expanding its activities. In 2018, the cooperative made 78 openings, to reach 560 stores, of mostly 3,200 to 4,300 square feet, in city centers, malls or on the outskirts. The ambition is to eventually reach 900 stores.

Biocoop also plans to launch an organic butcher’s concept, as well as bulk stores.
