California sweet corn season about to commence

As temperatures climb well into the 80’s and 90’s, we can tell spring is here & summer is right around the corner. Grilling season is fast approaching and with that, one California-based growers shared that its sweet corn is ready to make its debut come mid-April!

“Every year is different,” said Ryan Van Groningen, President of Van Groningen & Sons, Inc. Manteca, CA. “There are a number of variables that affect California growing and consuming, but a lot of it has to do with the weather. We had a very wet winter here in California, so right when the rain lets up, everyone is ready to spend some much needed time outside.” Van Groningen notes there are many creative & delicious ways to use sweet corn on your table this spring. He said the company's timeless favorite is grilling corn on the cob, with the husks pulled back exposing the kernels. Other interesting recipes include elote (a Mexican-style street corn) and Sweet Corn salad as a spring side. Fresh sweet corn can also be frozen to be used the rest of the year.

Van Groningen & Sons said it anticipates a great crop for sweet corn this year, including white, bi-color & yellow varieties. Last year, growers struggled in California with oversupply and lower demand. With temperatures remaining warm & harvest updates showing excellent quality, the company anticipates another strong start to sweet corn season this year with promotable quantities from the start.

Fire up those grills!
