European plums from Chile were "trending" on the Chinese market in recent days. The plums were advertised as "few calories, zero fat" and quickly seized the Chinese market. Chile is the largest exporter of European plums in the world. The overall surface area for European plum plantation in Chile reached 11.1 thousand hectares with an annual production volume of 75 thousand tons. Chile exports the plums to more than 70 countries worldwide, including European countries and Asian countries.
The overall surface area for European plum plantations in Chile has rapidly expanded in recent years to satisfy the growing consumer demand. The customs tariffs for European plum export from Chile to China were reduced to 0% after the two countries signed a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) in 2005.
The customs tariffs for plums from the USA, for example, is 25%. This means that plums from Chile are not just superior in quality, but also cheaper. This greatly strengthened the competitive power of Chile on the Chinese plum market.
