The current hostility of French producers towards the strawberries imported from Spain led to calls for a meeting at the prefecture of Vaucluse on Tuesday to tackle this imminent crisis. Fifteen people attended, including some producers and the Auchan, Carrefour and Casino chains, as well as state services like the DRAAF and DDT.
Producers from the Vaucluse have great difficulty selling their production and some farms are already greatly affected, and selling at a loss.
Supermarkets have committed themselves to promoting the French strawberry. They will set up more events in the stores, but also promote it in their commercial catalogues.
Producers do feel that their voices were heard, but they believe that these measures have come a little too late. The French strawberry should have been promoted since the beginning of the season, since it cannot compete with the other origins, especially Spain. As for the government, it has promised to accompany the professionals in developing signs of quality for their products.
