China: Supply of garlic shoots grows as prices decline

The production volume of garlic shoots declined earlier this year when cold weather affected production, but most production areas have recovered now and supply is growing. The price started out high but came down when supply increased. The price fell from more than 10 yuan [1.49 USD] per kg early in the season to around 8 yuan [1.19 USD] now. The price dropped by more than 20%, but is still more than double the price of 3.5 yuan [0.52 USD] around this time last year.

The supply of garlic shoots from some production areas is already coming to an end, but the supply of fresh garlic is beginning to grow. The previous market conditions, when the supply of autumn harvest ran out before the spring harvest entered the market, have begun to change, but the price is still quite high. The main reason for this is the low garlic price of last year, which reduced the enthusiasm of garlic farmers for an expansion of garlic production. In addition, low temperatures in early spring reduced the production volume. Overseas buyers gradually increase their orders in comparison with last year, which creates greater demand at a time when supply is limited. The price is therefore high, and even though the price is expected to come down when the supply volume of fresh garlic grows, the strong demand limits how far the price will fall.
