"Product from the south makes it difficult for Belgian cucumbers and courgettes"

"The situation is quite difficult for cucumbers, courgettes and aubergines at the moment. There are already large volumes of Belgian cucumbers and aubergines on the market, but there is also still product from the south present. This is causing pressure on the price at the moment," says Benny Cuypers of BelOrta. "Tomatoes have done reasonably well so far, but I get the impression that there is some mild pressure on the price forming. The Belgian tomatoes also have to deal with competition from Morocco."

It isn't exceptional for there to be competition from the south during the start of the greenhouse vegetable season. "The situation is different for peppers. The supply of peppers is still quite limited, so this will go well for the time being," according to Cuypers. "The quality of the Belgian greenhouse vegetables is very good. We experienced few problems and the vegetables have a good growing season behind them."
