Willem Schrage, Vegimex:

“First watermelons shipped from Morocco”

The watermelon season has finally started in Morocco. The products of Vegimex are the first that are exported from Agadir, and they’re ahead of the others in Morocco because of that. “The first lorries were sent from our plantations in Agadir to the Netherlands last weekend. The season started a bit later than last year because of this year’s cold weather. We’re therefore even happier to finally get started,” says Willem Schrage, general manager of Vegimex.

“Our Moroccan partners decided to delay the first shipments by some weeks, because volumes weren’t high enough yet. We’ve noticed everyone wants the first shipments from Morocco to create a good position on the market. Demand for our watermelons is very high in Europe because of that. In total, we expect a harvest of 15,000 tonnes of watermelons from our plantations.”

Vegimex BV is a new player on the European market. Besides watermelons, they also grow oranges, tomatoes and bell peppers. Additionally, Vegimex has entered into some cooperation agreements with local growers, and they recently opened their own packing station. “We’ve been preparing to achieve this result for a long time. We predict a fantastic summer for our products.”

“We’ve had our own packing station for some months, and we handle everything there before sending it to Europe. We’re now working with a transporter that provides us with containers and lorries, but we notice it’s difficult to handle demand. That's why we’re looking into the option of setting up our own transport, and sending our products directly from our packing station to our customers,” Willem concludes.
