Chinese tomato price begins to fall

Tomatoes have been in great demand since the beginning of March and the price continuously increased. The wholesale price at one point even reached 3.5 yuan [0.52 USD] per 0.5 kg. However, now that the supply volume is growing, the price is coming down.

Tomato production in China's main production areas declined last year as a result of excessive rainfall and high temperatures. This foreshadowed the tomato price increase in the winter market. At the same time, the overall surface area devoted to tomato plantation in production areas in north and south China was relatively large around this time last year, and when the farmers of Guangxi brought their harvest to the market in Liuzhou, many farmers and traders suffered financial losses. Production areas in north and south China began to reduce plantation in October last year and the price has been relatively high since then.

After Tomb-Sweeping Day [April 5th, 2019], the first harvest of greenhouse tomatoes is coming to an end. The second harvest will gradually enter the market in the coming weeks. The overall supply volume seems to be sufficient. Furthermore, open-field tomatoes from production areas in south China will soon enter the market as well. At that time the price of tomatoes is likely to come down even further.
