Artichokes: good productions from Tuscany and Sardinia

The wholesale market for artichokes has fluctuating prices depending on origin and quality. Those that sell the most are originally from Tuscany. The wholesaler Tazio Zavaglia adds: "Tuscan artichokes are of high quality and the perfect ones cost 80 cents per piece. They are among the tenderest on the market and with good prices. A few days ago they were priced at 1 euro per piece.

Sardinia had a different situation. The year was totally negative because of the winter weather conditions that decimated production. Now the island's artichokes are beginning to reappear in the markets. They are quoted on average 50 cents per piece and are of excellent quality.

"Apulia has had a good production during the whole season, while now we are towards the end of the production. Prices range between 40 and 60 cents, depending on the quality. Some second-choice and light-coloured ones go down to 30 cents per piece".

Apulian artichokes

"In Apulia, in recent weeks there has been a good market for Opal artichokes, basically a cross between the Roman and Violet. The quality was good and the prices very interesting".

But how long will the market remain lively? Zavaglia concludes: "It is difficult to predict this, but we hope that the upcoming Easter holidays will support sales".
