Colruyt Group launches reusable bags for fruits and vegetables

The Belgian retail chain Colruyt has decided to ban all non-reusable packagings from its fruit and vegetable aisles. The goal is set for October 2019.

From June 19th, all Bio-Planet stores and some pilot stores from the group (Colruyt, Okay & Spar) will replace single-use plastic bags for fruits and vegetables in bulk with reusable bags, specially designed for this purpose. The bags are machine-washable, can be used about a hundred times and will carry up to 4kg.

With this action, the group hopes to save 150 million plastic bags a year. “It is unfortunately not possible yet to ban all plastic from the wholesale trade, but we are trying nevertheless to avoid and reduce our use of plastic by replacing it with reusable, recyclable and renewable materials,” explains Christophe Dehandschutter, sales director at Colruyt Meilleurs Prix.
