China: "Shandong market demand for carrots is stable"

"The annual production volume of Chinese carrots is immense. Production areas are spread throughout the country. The largest production volumes come from production areas in Shandong and Fujian. The carrot production season in Shandong officially opens in the middle of May. The carrots from Shandong look more slender than the carrots from Fujian, and more pleasing to the eye in general. Furthermore, they are also cheaper. As for the flavor, there is no distinction between various production areas in Shandong and Fujian, but only between carrot varieties." This is according to Mr. Green Bai of Dalian Farm International Trade Co., Ltd.

"Based on current conditions we expect this year's carrot production volume in Shandong to remain stable at the same level as last year. The market demand from domestic and international traders is also quite stable. Consumers are increasingly aware that eating carrots is beneficial to one's health, and the market demand is therefore only likely to grow even further. This is a positive development for the carrot market."

"The international market has different demands for packaging than the domestic market. According to our observation, the Middle Eastern market prefers 7-8 kg cardboard boxes, while the African market leans towards 6-9 kg cardboard boxes, and the Asian market goes for 8-10 kg cardboard boxes. As for size, the M-grade carrots are in the majority in the African, Middle Eastern, and Southeast Asian markets, while L-grade and larger carrots are popular in Korea and other East Asian markets."

"We already have the resources to meet with the requirements for export to the European market and in the upcoming production season we hope to increase our carrot export volume. We are quite pleased with the export market prospects. The carrot supply from other countries does not offer serious competition to Chinese carrots. This is mainly because the cost price of labor and resources is lower in China, and the supply period is longer."
