Taiwanese pineapple prices still looking bleak

Pineapples are the most important export product among all the agricultural products from Taiwan. The Taiwanese pineapple market faced severe collapse last year, but recovered with the help of traders from China. Farmers were able to recover some of their losses. This year the harvest season begins in April, but there is already news that the Taiwanese pineapples matured too early because of changing weather conditions, and the pineapples are slow to accumulate sugar content. The current price still falls short of the price last year.

Consumers everywhere love the Taiwanese Jinzuan pineapple because it has a rich fragrance, tastes sweet, and is juicy. The Jinzuan pineapple leads Taiwanese fruit export for the third year in a row. It is for these reasons that visiting traders from China have a deep love for Jinzuan pineapples and buy them like crazy. However, Taiwanese pineapple farmers began to complain last year because the price of the famous No. 17 Jinzuan pineapple dropped by 50% in less than half a month. The wholesale price went from 20 NTD [0.65 USD] per kg to 10 NTD [0.32 USD].

The 2019 production season is coming closer and the price is still looking bleak
The Taiwanese pineapple harvest begins in April. Local media stated: "Taiwanese pineapples matured too early because of changing weather conditions, and the pineapples are slow to accumulate sugar content. Even though the winter was relatively warm, the night-time temperatures were low. As a result, the flavor of pineapples was still quite sour in March. The growing supply volume of sour pineapples creates obstacles for smooth market operations."

Taiwanese pineapples are not the only pineapples on the Chinese fruit market. There are also pineapples from Hainan, MD2 pineapples from the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, and South America. In other words, Chinese consumers have a choice from a wide variety of pineapples, which puts a lot of pressure on Taiwanese Jinzuan pineapples to perform well.
