Market Report Austria KW 14/2019:

'Imported goods supplement domestic potato supply - declining availability of onions'

The 2018/19 marketing season for table potatoes is slowly coming to an end. Although retailers are still offered smaller quantities of goods, the majority yet available comes from long-term supply agreements. Sales of domestic goods have slowed down in recent weeks. Consumers are more likely to buy foreign new potatoes this year than in other years. Due to the higher volumes of imported potatoes from both new and old crops, older potatoes of Austrian provenance are likely to be available for longer than was previously assumed.

Price situation unchanged
Despite the meagre supply situation, the price situation is unchanged. In Lower Austria, table potatoes are usually sold at €25 per 100 kg. For wire-worm-free, small packable premium goods with AMA quality label, up to €30 per 100 kg can be achieved. In Upper Austria up to €29 per 100 kg were paid recently. Preparations for the next potato season are running at full speed under ideal conditions. A particularly early start of the Heurigen harvest 2019 is currently not expected.

Again rising onion prices
The range of onions from Lower Austria is constantly decreasing, but it is still of good quality. The goods are now almost exclusively coming from refrigerated warehouses. The diminishing supply continues to be sold both domestically and abroad. However, exports were cut back in order to cover domestic demand. Producer prices for onions intended for domestic sales have again noticeably increased. For onion, cleaned and sorted in the box, depending on the quality and size, the price was between €54 and 58 per 100 kg.

Consistent carrot market
The conditions on the Austrian carrot market did not really change. Sales are going steadily in Germany and abroad. Regarding prices, there are no big changes either. Producer prices are stable at a good level.
