Supplies of coconuts into the United States are beginning to tighten due to an approaching holiday in Thailand, one of the major sources of coconuts at this time of year. Songkran is the Thai New Year and is one of the most significant holidays in the country, occurring in the middle of April. Many Thais travel during this period which results in a slowdown in fruit production.
"We ship coconuts year-round from both Thailand and Vietnam," said Felipe Jimenez of Vega Produce in Florida. "These are typically made up of Young Coconuts which vary from the green and dry coconuts. They are often cut into a diamond shape and often served for drinking. Labor can affect supplies and at the moment, shipping is tight due to the Songkran festival in Thailand."
Demand strong
As the weather turns warmer, demand for coconuts - especially Young Coconuts used for drinking - begins to increase, which is what shippers are seeing now. This is prompting the market to climb, especially as supplies are tighter right now.
"We ship coconuts across the US and in all regions, we are now seeing demand strengthen heading towards summer," Jimenez noted. "The market is likely to remain high for at least the next two months or so."
New products for Vega Produce
Vega Produce, being a tropical fruit and vegetable specialist, has something new on the horizon. The company will soon be launching dragon fruit with a new carton as part of their lineup. The fruit is being sourced from Ecuador and the company has created special branding.
"We are launching our new Dragon Fruit Red and Yellow from Ecuador with a new carton," Jimenez announced. "The carton is called Draggy and is an ideal stand for displays."
