For the time being, Austrian wholesale still relies on domestic stocks

"New Zealand onions available in 4 to 6 weeks at the earliest"

The existing Austrian onion stocks are being sold evenly. Onions are sold domestically as well as abroad. However, the quantities available for the domestic market are decreasing and domestic prices have increased accordingly. Nonetheless, we will still have to wait for the first imported goods for a while, according to a wholesaler

"We are expecting the first supplies from New Zealand only to arrive in 4 to 6 weeks. Up until then, the supply of cold store goods is still sufficient out to meet domestic demand. In other words, we can cover both wholesale goods and medium-caliber calibres for retail programs with domestic supplies," says a spokeswoman for a Lower Austrian wholesale trade.

Positive price trend
The current price trend in the domestic market is mainly positive, according to the latest market report from the Chamber of Agriculture. Austrian onions are likely to be available until the new crop arrives; free goods may end sooner. For onions, cleaned and sorted in the box, depending on the quality and size, the costs were usually between €50,- and 54, - per 100kg.
