The Dutch greenhouse strawberry season has started again. “The Dutch strawberry season will be officially opened during the Red Cross Blossom Walk on Saturday 13 April. We’ll spare no expense to inform consumers the new Dutch strawberry season will have opened. The majority of greenhouse strawberries will arrive on the market around week 16,” says Ton de Jong of FruitMasters. Prices of good strawberries are at a level around 2.50 euro, and the salesman thinks this is fair for the time of year. “The sales of the greenhouse strawberries is now primarily focused on the domestic market, and the German market is always present at the start of the season.”
The greenhouse strawberry production is increasing at the expense of outdoor production for FruitMasters as well. “Outdoor production isn’t very significant for us anymore. Growers are focused on quality. They’re less dependent on the weather when having racks and greenhouse production. In the Breda region, outdoor production is still a bit more important,” Ton says. The experienced salesman thinks it’s difficult to make a good prognosis for the season. “You could look two weeks ahead at most, but no more. Look at what happened with the weather last year, that can’t be predicted. But there will be plenty of strawberries.”
