Winter leeks: “We should last until May”

The winter leek season is coming to an end. “This year, the season was not catastrophic. The offer was globally sufficient and relatively balanced with the demand,” explains Jacques Madec, buyer at the company Réseau Le Saint. “As far as the leek is concerned, we buy locally in Brittany to resell on the same territory. And within our marketing area, we did not feel any competition from other countries.”

The production was relatively abundant but started a bit late. “However, this delay is not a real problem because it also allows us to have some merchandise later in the season,” explains Jacques. “It was more problematic at the beginning of the season when we had no product. But now, we know that the stocks will be sold, with just a little bit of delay. And the demand, which was good throughout the season, is still reasonable at the moment.”

Despite some fluctuations, prices were generally decent throughout the season, but “they are definitely not very high now,” according to Jacques.

As for the stocks, it is difficult to know exactly when they will all be sold, but Jacques indicates that there is some merchandise left for the moment. “I am not sure until when. Usually, we manage to make it until the new leeks in May. This means that we have a month left, and I think we can do it.”
