Melons: Slow start to the season in France

It is the very beginning of the melon season. “We are just now starting the season with the green Charentais variety from Morocco,” explains Ange Temime, president of the company Vigier Shirley, wholesaler at the Rungis market specialized in melons in the summer. “Then we will continue with the Spanish origin, selling yellow Charentais melons, until the French season starts with the same variety.” Ange is very pleased with the quality this year.

Melon consumption in France is highly dependent on the weather, but the mild spring temperatures in February did not really increase the demand. “People wait more or less for the season to really start consuming melons. And I think that this year, the season will truly start within the next month, between the end of March and mid-April.”

In terms of price, Ange indicates that it is difficult to tell because the melon is sold individually. “At the moment, a 15, which is a fruit of 750g, is sold at about 1.60-1.70 euro [1.8-1.9 USD] per piece.”
