District of Bajo Cinca

Spain expects early harvest and higher volume of cherries and stone fruit

The stone fruit trees in the region of the Bajo Cinca are already in their curdling stage, that is nearly fifteen days earlier for some species, such as the cherry tree, than in the same period of last year.

Nectarines are in the growing stage

"The weather this winter was more similar to spring, as the days were sunny and temperatures mild. As a result, the flowering, fruit set, and fruit development are advancing much faster than usual," stated producer Manuel Navarro, a partner of the Fitoagro cooperative, of Fraga, Huesca.

In addition to having an early fruit, production is expected to be higher than in the 2018 season, if there are no adverse weather events until the harvest period.

"At the moment, temperatures have dropped a bit and there is a chance of frost. Fortunately, we have a frost control system, in case it happens."

The fact that the cherry comes early offers very positive advantages at a commercial level, according to Manuel Navarro.

"We expect this will be one of the earliest harvests we've had, as opposed to last year, when we had one of the latest harvests ever. Early cherries are quoted at very high prices because there is very little cherry available in the market."

The early varieties, which have a dark color, large sizes, high brix, and high hardness, are the most valued on the market, according to the producer.

This next campaign, Fitoagro will open new facilities with three buildings that are connected, a new cold chamber, several offices, a meeting room, an outdoor esplanade, and a loading dock.
