Joey Deen, Denimpex:

"Shortages and rising prices on the lime market"

"It seems it is eventually the end of the bad limes prices. European importers have been plagued by extremely low demand and prices since mid-December. Brazil also sent far too many limes to Europe. We were, therefore, not able to rid ourselves of old stock," says Joey Deen of Denimpex in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

"We saw the export volumes from Brazil decreasing from week 4. This decline has now, eventually, caused prices to rise and shortages on the market. We do not expect these volumes to increase in the short term either," explains the importer.

"In Brazil, it has been raining nonstop. This means the volume of export quality limes is limited. The Mexican fruit will probably also not yet come onto the European market. This is because of the market in the United States. There, prices are between $45 and 50 per 40lbs (just over 18kg) box," concludes Joey.
