About four weeks ago, the overseas top fruit season started for BioTropic in Bleiswijk, the Netherlands. “We’re getting plenty of green and red Williams pears from Argentina, the first D’Anjous have arrived, and we expect the first Packham and Abate Fetel later this week,” says Dick Troost. “We’re expecting to sell considerable volumes in the coming months.”
“The top fruit supply on the European market is larger than last year, resulting in a calm start. A lot of wholesalers are still choosing domestic organic top fruit, as long as it’s good quality, but other players and retailers are already getting into overseas product,” Dick continues. “Price levels are a bit lower than last year, but the market was empty then, so that’s understandable.”
Late next week, the overseas assortment will be complemented with the first Royal Gala apples from Argentina, followed by the varieties Cripps Pink and Fuji. In May, these will be followed by apples from New Zealand, such as Royal Gala, Braeburn and Cripps Pink. “It will be a bit tense, considering the supply of organic apples still available in countries such as Italy and Germany. Last year, there were hardly any European apples available, and sales were spread out more, but it’ll be different now,” Dick says.
BioTropic primarily sells the organic top fruit to German-speaking countries, the Benelux, France and Scandinavia. “Traditionally, our overseas organic pears last until mid-July when the French pears arrive on the market, the overseas apple season lasts until late August,” Dink concludes.
