Still enough Norwegian onions until May

In Norway, the 2018 onion harvest was disappointing. Despite this, a sufficient amount of onions will still be available in this country until the end of May. Although they are slightly smaller than usual, they are of good quality. This is according to the Norwegian cooperative, Gartnerhallen.

Norway imported onions throughout the entire season. This is precisely why this Scandinavian country's onion stocks have not yet been depleted. However, in a typical year, these onions are available until June/July. This period is much shorter this year.

This increased scarcity is not only noticeable in Norway but also in many other countries. For example, Great Britain harvested 40% fewer onions than usual. The Netherlands harvested 30% fewer than other years too. And in Germany, growers prices sometimes doubled to be able to compensate the farmers in some way.

Fortunately, the new onion plants can go into the ground in mid-April again. In this way, there will, hopefully, be Norwegian onions on store shelves by the first week in August. Before then, fresh onions and spring onions will be available from the beginning of July.

Optimal onion growing weather should result in a good onion harvest. For this, the nights need to be 15 degrees Celsius and the days, 25 degrees. There must also be a dry spell after harvesting has been completed. This dry weather is needed so the onions can dry out.
