INN lands in Chile to discuss the development of new varieties of fruit trees

The annual meeting of the International New Varieties Network (INN), a company composed of a select group of fruit and nursery managers of the world, whose representative in Chile is the company ANA Chile, was held in Pucon on March 18 and 19.

The INN, which is based in the United States, also has operations in Europe, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, Mexico, and Chile, among other places. Its main objectives are the search, administration, and commercial distribution of new variety genetics, with special emphasis on pip fruit.

Some of the most important contributions of the International New Varieties Network to the Chilean industry have been making available to its producers, through ANA-Chile and its sub-licensed nurseries, the Rosy Glow, Lady in red, Modí® CIVG- 198, Jeromine, Galaval, and Jugala apple varieties. They have also made the Tip Top cherry, the Magique® Maillarmagie nectarine and the FireStar®Icon table grape, among many other products, available to producers.

Today, producers have expectations regarding new varietal fruit options, as well as the launching of the new rootstocks that are being developed by the East Malling Research Station of England and the Plant & Food Research of New Zealand. The INN group is contributing new genetics to the Chilean fruit industry, through ANA Chile, allowing it to remain current, competitive, and among the main suppliers of fruit in the southern hemisphere.

In addition to the meetings that will take place during these two days, INN members will have the opportunity to visit nurseries, fruit orchards, process plants and variety evaluation plots in the south-central area, in order to update their knowledge about the Chilean industry and verify the adequate compliance and respect for the Intellectual Property of protected varieties, a fundamental and sensitive aspect to continue allowing access to new genetics in the country.
