Pineapple: small offer and rising prices

After several months when pineapples were exported at very low prices, the situation on the spot market seems to be improving: “The demand is there, only the offer does not keep up. The pineapples are green when they arrive and there is less merchandise available. Consequently, prices have been rising on the spot market for about 3 weeks,” explains Stéphane, sales representative at Jeanningros S.A..

Generally speaking, a package is currently sold around 13 to 15 euros [14.75 to 17 USD], for varieties from Costa Rica and Cameroon. But according to Stéphane, this often happens every year in March: a small production which has trouble meeting the demand, and prices that go up on the spot market. “It is generally a slow month. But starting from April, we should see an increase of the offer,” concludes Stéphane.
