Kissabel is coming to the market soon

New apple variety to compete with 'Superfoods'

The per capita consumption of apples in Germany has been declining for several years. Ulrich Mayr, of the Competence Center for Fruit Growing (KOB) in Bavenburg, told a reporter from the local newspaper Südkurier, that this is due to competition from numerous tropical fruits from all over the world. Domestic fruit growers want to counteract this negative development by launching new varieties. The industry now has high hopes for new, red-pulped varieties like the Kissabell.

Great potential
"This modern variety is the result of the crossing of old apple varieties with wild apple and dessert fruit varieties," explains Mayr. In previous Germany-wide test sales, these apples have already proven their potential, says Esther Dworak, marketing director of Obst vom Bodensee. In the Lake Constance region, there are now larger plantings and next autumn, the end user will be able to buy the red-pulped apples.
