American fruit competes with Southeast Asian fruit on the Chinese market

The demand for top-quality fresh fruit is growing in China as a result of increased disposable income. Consumers pay more attention to product quality, food safety, and nutritional value. Data from Beijing Xinfadi Market shows that the overall trade volume of agricultural products reached 16.89 million tons last year. That is 710 thousand tons more than in 2017. The share of premium, imported fruit rapidly expanded, while the import of common fruit and vegetables steadily grew.

The growing consumption of top-quality, imported fruit brings many commercial opportunities for farmers and traders. Three years ago, the market was dominated by Southeast Asian fruits such as durian, mangosteen, pineapple, and longans. In the last two years, however, such American fruits as cherries, kiwi fruit, and blueberries encroached upon the market share of traditional, tropical fruits from Southeast Asia, and challenged their dominant position in the Chinese market.
