Lars Grossmann, IMG Beerenfrucht GmbH:

"By growing in different regions, we can deliver blueberries until July"

"The strawberry harvest in Morocco is already in full swing, so we have an advantage over the Spanish product, which until now has only been available in small and correspondingly expensive quantities," says Lars Grossmann, Managing Director of Berry Fruit IMG GmbH. "We are harvesting strawberries in the northern region of Morocco until the end of April." Supply and demand are good: "Especially since we are so early on the market, demand is great."

The company had recently created additional blueberry fields in southern Morocco and is now eagerly anticipating the first batches of berries to be harvested by the end of the month. "So far, you will only find goods from South America in the retail sector, but that will change soon, and with our new acreage we have a clear advantage, as we can harvest the berries much earlier than before." Quantities and demand are very good, says Grossmann. "By growing in different regions, we can probably supply the market with blueberries until July." Since 2003, IMG Beerenfrucht GmbH has created numerous plantations for goji berries all over Europe.

For as long as 2009, Grossmann has been growing aronia berries in Germany, and since two years he and his partners have a large acreage for soft fruits of all kinds in Morocco. The focal point of cultivation there is goji, blueberries, cranberries, raspberries and strawberries. In addition to the cultivation, marketing and packaging of berries, Grossmann and its partners also offer advice to potential growers.

In Germany, the company cultivates ariona berries, which are in bloom at the end of April and will be harvested in August. "Aronias are not yet very well-known for fresh consumption, but we want to tackle that this year. In the last few years, the cultivation areas in Lower Saxony for aronias have quadrupled, much of these are still destined for processing (jam, for example) But if there is also a blueberry packer near our plantation, so we have the opportunity to pack fresh aronia berries for the retail trade this year."
