Market Report Austria KW 11/2019:

'Potato stocks are dwindling, high-priced onion export'

In Austria, the marketing of edible potatoes from the old harvest is much more advanced this year than in normal years. The high physiological age of the tubers causes great problems and leads to large removals. Rust staining is also an issue in marketing this year. But there are also lots of good quality. The delivery volumes are getting smaller and is limited mainly to contract goods.

At the beginning of April, the stocks should be emptied of firm-cooking varieties - In the food trade as long as possible Austrian potato should be offered. Domestic producer prices remain unchanged - in Lower Austria, table potatoes are usually taken over by € 25/100 kg. For wireworm-free, small packable premium goods with AMA quality label, up to € 30/100 kg can be asked. In Upper Austria up to € 29 Euro/100 kg were last paid. The new potato season has already begun. It is estimated that one third of Austria's new potato area will be planted.

Onion market: high prices in exports
The marketing of Austrian onions shows little change. The onion is constantly sold domestically, but exports are also made continuously. The prices that can be achieved in exports have reached a very good level and are higher than those achieved in sales to domestic retail chains. The quality of the stock goods is satisfactory. In contrast to potatoes, onion should be sufficiently available until the new harvest. Producer prices remain unchanged. For onion, cleaned and sorted in the box, depending on the quality and size, the costs were usually between € 48 and 52 / 100kg.

Lower Austria: No changes in the carrot market
There is no change in the marketing of Austrian carrots. The available supply is consistently sold both domestically and abroad. Domestic sales will remain slightly below the level of previous years, due to higher consumer prices. Producer prices remain unchanged this week.
