Annie Lebleu, wholesaler’s Verdigro:

“Sometimes we get more demand than supply of Cordero citrus”

After a somewhat calm period as a result of the warm weather, the citrus trade is now recovering again. “Now that the weather is a bit colder and the holiday is over, we’ve noticed demand for citrus recovering again,” says Annie Lebleu of wholesaler’s Verdigro.

Verdigro is active on the wholesaler’s market in Roeselare, Belgium, and they have the exclusive rights to selling the Cordero citrus. “We’re very satisfied with the sales of the Cordero oranges. At the start of the season we got more demand than supply,” Annie continues. “The quality of the oranges is very good this year, and prices have been fairly stable throughout the season. We notice that our customers make repeat purchases of Cordero, after buying it the first time. Customers remain loyal to the brand, despite the higher price level.”

Spanish product
“We’ve noticed our customers prefer Spanish citrus over Moroccan and Egyptian product. Yet in recent years, we’ve also seen Egyptian and Moroccan citrus improving. However, when giving our customers the choice, they prefer a Spanish salustiana over an Egyptian Valencia,” Annie says. When the Spanish Cordero citrus season is over, the wholesaler’s will switch to Cordero citrus from South Africa.

Sweet Cordero
Besides the Cordero citrus, Verdigro also has bananas and a cherry tomato of the same brand in their range. “Demand for the bananas is good as long as it’s spring. Demand tends to be a bit less every holiday. These bananas are in the cheaper segment, but it’s a good quality product. The Sweet Cordero cherry season hasn’t started yet, but last year we received very positive responses to the product. We still have to wait a bit to get the tasty, sweet vine tomato in our range again,” Annie concludes.
