Top fruit exporter Kees Oskam fears for quality problems in final months of the season

“It’s difficult to earn money on a falling market”

The situation in the trade of top fruit is very challenging at the moment. “Quality is becoming an issue for the coming months. The warm growth season has left its marks. Fortunately, we’re now getting some cooler weather, but it’s only the beginning of March, and it will be quite challenging for both apples and pears to come to a good end of the season,” says Kees Oskam of Handelsmaatschappij Jan Oskam from Vleuten, the Netherlands.

“Some top fruit is being sold, but it’s definitely not a demand market. Some pears are sent to Germany, Scandinavia is on the scene but below-par in my opinion, and some pears are sold to France, Spain and Poland. Stocks are large and prices are at a questionable level. There are some peaks for special sizes or good quality, but it’s mediocre in general, and prices are hardly changing. All in all, it’s a difficult season. It’s difficult to earn money on a falling market, whether you’re a trader, grower or a combination of the two,” Kees concludes.
