According to Ahmed al-Attar, head of the Central Department of Agricultural Quarantine at the Ministry of Agriculture, Egypt has exported 514,000 tons of citrus fruits to all countries since the beginning of the new fruits and vegetables export season.
In an interview with Egypt Today, he said that strict measures are applied on all exports of vegetables and fruits to ensure increasing exports of agricultural products to all international markets in accordance with international standards. Attar affirmed that in case a company violates the procedures, it faces suspension, is referred to the General Prosecution, and will not be able to deal with the Central Department of Agricultural Quarantine.
In January, the Cabinet's media center denied reports on a drop in Egypt's citrus fruit exports, clarifying that Egypt's citrus exports had surged in 2018. Reportedly, Egypt is the world's second exporter of citrus fruits.
In December 2018, Attar said that citrus fruits and potatoes are the most exported types in Egypt in 2018, adding that the country has exported about 1.7 million tons of citrus fruits since the beginning of the year. He added that the country also exported around 800,000 tons of potatoes since the beginning of 2018.
