The Dominican Republic will be part of a cooperation agreement to improve organic banana production

The Dominican Institute of Agricultural and Forestry Research (Idiaf) will be part of a regional technical cooperation agreement for the development of technologies for the efficient production of organic bananas for export and the reduction of losses caused by the thrip of the red spot in Musaceae in the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, and Peru.

The initiative, which is sponsored by the Regional Fund for Agricultural Technology (Fontagro), will last 48 months and requires an investment of US $ 948,827 (equivalent to RD $ 47.9 million). The initiative is expected to help increase the number of boxes harvested per unit area, contribute to the improvement of the producers profits, and expand the producer's organization capacity.

With this alliance, the three countries hope to address the climatic variability, such as prolonged droughts and abnormal floods, that affects their agricultural production zones.
