Marcel van Rooijen, Torres Tropical Fresh:

"The Peruvian mango season is ending entirely differently to expectations"

The mango market is stabilizing at the moment. "The volumes from Peru are decreasing, and the demand is good," says Marcel van Rooijen of the Dutch company, Torres Tropical Fresh. "The Piura season is over."

"We are now switching to cultivation in Casma. There, production is, however, significantly lower than last year. Then, the growth conditions were perfect. Currently, there is too much rain. This means the Peruvian season will end very differently than everyone expected."

"Price-wise, the tail end of the season will also be better and more stable than the past two years. Currently, the mangoes sales price is between EUR4 and EUR5,50, depending on the quality. However, I expect that, within the next ten days, it will end up on the EUR6 level.

"The Brazilian supply is also lagging. The first Tommy Atkins variety only arrived this week from Brazil. From next week, the Palmer will follow. The Kent variety of mangoes are, however, only available in limited quantities on the market," says Marcel.

According to this importer, the spring sunshine is also boosting the lime market. "This market has also been very dramatic. It is, however, slowly picking up. The volumes have been lagging for three weeks now," he explains.

"Prices are between EUR4 and 4,75. However, I expect this to go in the direction of EUR5 and up next week. But, this kind of drama does not just end. Last year, in November, there were very few limes on the market."

"In other years, the prices shot above EUR10. Last year, however, we could not make more than EUR7. Not because there was a surplus of limes but because there was no demand. Fortunately, the sun is shining again," Marcel concludes.
