China: Pomelo wholesaler sells at a loss, despite high retail prices

Pomelo with its good moisture, good taste and easy storage is one of the most popular fruits in winter. However, in the near future, in some honey pomelo bases, supermarkets and farmer's markets, pomelo may become hard to sell in the wholesale chain. At retail markets, pomelos are out of stock. At the same time, pomelos from Fujian occupied most of Chongqing's market.

In some farmers' markets and fruit shops, the average price of pomelos is 2.8 yuan to 3 yuan per jin, and the price in some supermarkets is more than 4 yuan / jin. Red heart honey pomelos produced in Fujian can be as high as 5.9 yuan to 9.9 yuan / jin. Many consumers are sensing that the price is much higher than in previous years.

At present, the grapefruit on the market mostly consists of Fujian pomelos. But since 2018 is an off year for pomelos, production will be greatly reduced compared with previous years. The output in Chongqing is more than 30% down, which directly leads to a 10%-20% decline in harvest. Fujian pomelo's production is more than 50% lower. The cuts in production leads directly to the high prices, which in turn leads to the strange behaviour of the retail and wholesale markets.

In addition, another reason for the "weird" phenomenon is closely related to the 2017 market situation. That year, the pomelo market was booming, which led to major wholesalers increasing their purchases. In 2018, the large production cuts in the production chain caused a “war” between dealers, further reducing the profit margin of wholesalers.
