Canada: Beet juice beats the snow

The city of Sherbrooke in Quebec has been spreading a solution made from beet juice to make roads less slippery after a snow storm.

“”It is the second time this season that we've used this solution,” explains Guylaine Boutin, director of the Roads Division. “We have been using it for four years and it must be sprayed when the roads are still dry. The beet juice prevents the snow from sticking to the asphalt.” Motorists noticed the appearance of black lines on the roads.

Some 8 to 15 inches of snow fell on the region in the night from Tuesday to Wednesday.
