The leading event of the organic industry, Biofach, has finished this Saturday. Again this year, many exhibitors and trade visitors found their way to the Nuremberg fair. As at Fruit Logistica in Berlin, sustainability is clearly in the foreground in the organic sector as well. Apart from modern packaging solutions, new varieties and innovative product presentations at the POS are now part of the long-term sustainability strategy of retailers.
From grass paper to new products
This year's largest packaging innovations include compostable grass paper as well as sustainable carrier bags and cellulose nets. Another trend currently gaining momentum is the placement of new varieties of fruit, both locally grown and imported. Apple variety Natyra is establishing itself quite quickly on the market and is seen more and more often on the shelves of larger chains. In the case of tropical fruits, red-fleshed orange variety Cara Cara -which has already seen attractive sales rates in the conventional sector- is now being offered in retail from organic production.
