"Growing demand for garlic temporarily increased the price"

"The price of garlic showed an obvious rise in the first week after Chinese Spring Festival [February 5th, 2019]. This was the complete opposite of predictions made by people in the industry prior to the Spring Festival." This is according to Liu Qingfeng of Ju'nan County Greenfood Co., Ltd.

"Various garlic production areas all experienced a significant price increase in comparison with the period prior to Spring Festival. This development runs counter to the intuition of experienced garlic traders. The overall garlic production volume in 2018 was huge and so was the volume in storage. Market supply greatly exceeded market demand, and in this situation it is normal that the price of garlic would drop after the increased demand during Spring Festival subsided. That is what experts in the industry predicted."

"I think that the main reason for this development is continued demand after Spring Festival. The market was closed during Spring Festival and the backlog of orders piled up. This backlog created great demand in the first week after the market opened again. The result was a temporary price increase."

"The Chinese garlic market has been in a roller coaster for several years now, both in terms of garlic price and production volume. Many people predict that the production volume in 2019 will decrease by 10%-20% because the price of garlic was terrible in 2018. However, I think that this will affect the basic cost price in the garlic market. Even though the production volume will be smaller, it will only come down from excessive production to regular levels."

"Our garlic comes from plantations we manage in cooperation with farmers. We mainly export to Europe, North Africa, Latin America, and countries in the Caribbean. In addition to garlic we also deal in onions, fresh ginger, and pomelo, which we export in small volumes to Europe, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Indonesia."
