Stefan Ranstrand, Tomra

“Curbing food wastage is our No. 1 priority"

“Our main goals for the future are to reduce food wastage and increase revenue. We want to do this together with our clients", said Stefan Ranstrand at a press conference held at last week's Fruit Logistica. Stefan is the CEO of Tomra. "The world's population keeps growing."

"In 2050, we will need 70% more food than we do today. We want to use our technologies to not only help people waste less food. We want to put more food on the table too." This Belgian company also want to continue investing in new technologies and their relationship with their clients.

Tomra started off developing machines and technologies for the mining industry. In 2011, the company switched over to the foodstuffs business. "We use practically the same sensor technology that we used in the mining industry. There, we used it to see into rocks to find out whether they contained any diamonds", he explained.

"Now we use this technology to determine a product's shelf life. This contributes to curbing food wastage. We can also check the sweetness of a product. Knowing this, a company can guarantee the products' taste and quality for their clients."

Food safety
“Food wastage is an important issue in almost every country in the world. Besides this, food safety is also high on the agenda. With our sensor technology, we can easily detect foreign materials in products." This ensures the food safety of these products. We also look at each country or continents different requirements. We have noticed that in Asia, many small companies have different production sizes than, for example, businesses in Europe and America."

"This is especially true for companies in China. This is why we have a Research and Development division in China. This facility creates highly targeted solutions for this market", continued Stefan.

Tomra is a market leader in the technology field. The company, therefore, enables various growers to improve the accuracy and efficiency of their yields. These growers come from the potato, vegetable, and fruit sectors.

“It is also imperative for us to understand the needs of our clients. We do not only want to provide sorting accuracy. We want to ensure that the machines keep running too. They must as perform as well as possible", concluded Stefan.
